The Learner's Angle |

|
by Alan Steinborn Think telemarketer interrupting your dinner. Think of a boring meeting. Think driver cutting into your lane without using a signal. Think heated, polarized political argument with all too predictable result. Think of a personality that increased your blood pressure just by being in their presence. Or think of something that really hurt you!
Now for the big question: How did you respond? Getting annoyed or hurt is like every other experience. What hurt you or made you uncomfortable is not so important. How you respond is WHAT TRULY COUNTS!!! Did you stay open and connected with the other person, or did you withdraw? Did you counter attack? Did you take it personally? Here is a way to keep you going and flowing; even when your annoyance is growing!!! I call it the learner's angle. Simply stay with the sensations and silently repeat the question "What can I learn from you now?". Repeat this question NO MATTER WHAT YOU THINK OR FEEL. Don't worry about getting an answer to the question; don't worry about
receiving a lesson you recognize and understand. DON'T EVEN WORRY ABOUT A SOLUTION TO YOUR PROBLEM!!! Simply keep asking "What can I learn from you now?" and you
will open into insight and wisdom and In any case, by staying with your thoughts and feelings and not reacting, you will gain a greater focus, presence and you will avoid the trap of letting habits, judgments and unfulfilled preferences get the best of you! You will gain energy and personal power and freedom from knee jerk responses that would otherwise rule your existance! Having the awareness to ask the question takes practice. I offer a weekly training to give you such practice. It is called the InPresence Weekly and you can read about it by clicking here. Please email me and let me know what you think of this article. Yours in Presence, Alan Steinborn
